National Trust Association Talk: The Life of Emma Hamilton

April 22 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

£4.50

This copiously illustrated talk will cover the early life of Emma Hamilton as mistress to the aristocracy and as model and muse to the painter George Romney.  The scene will move to Naples where she met both her husband and her lover Lord Nelson.

Returning to England she found a house for the three of them at Merton Place.  We will see plans and pictures of the house (sadly demolished), its location and the extent of the 160 acre estate.

The name of Merton as a town, rather than a large borough, has all but disappeared, but it survives in a few places. The talk will give details of the family’s life in Merton, the death of Nelson and Emma’s eventual decline and ruin.
